Tell me about your featured photo(s). When were they taken? Why are they your favorite?

This was my absolute first pinup shoot and I was lucky enough to find a fantastic couple George Jenkins and Chris Kridler that opened up their personal home tiki bar for my shoot. 2012

How long have you been modeling/enjoying photography?
Photography is my favorite form of art. I've been fascinated with pinup, vintage, retro, and old classic glamour as long as I can remember. There is a picture of me as a toddler with my hand on my hip and my head tilted to the side with a wink and blowing a kiss. A natural coquette if you will.

Who are your favorite Pinup Models?
Wowza where do I start and finish?
Jasmin Rodriguez is probably my absolute favorite, wait La Cholita ties for that spot. Little Bit is gorgeous. Mosh, a local gal with I think national potential Samantha Sweets, Heidi van Horne is flawless. Truly any gal that realizes she has unbridled sexuality and beauty and places herself in front of a camera for posterity is a woman that I admire!

Past or present inspiration?
Hands down Mae West. The queen of innuendos. I also love that although she was not a "classic beauty" that she dared you to say otherwise by her confidence and allure.

What is some of your favorite clothing lines? Collectif, Pinup Couture, Trashy Diva, Stop Staring, Whirling Turban, Hell Bunny. Can I have them all?

Favorite Designers?
Hmm, I have to say that Oscar de la Renta makes me drool. Impeccable attention to detail and romanticism, femininity, and classic silhouettes.

If you could shoot with any photographer, past or present, who would it be?
Bunny Yeager I think she had a knack for drawing out inner playfulness in her photography.

What is your favorite color and why?
Rojo the color of love, lust, and passion. Plus who doesn't feel better with a fresh coat of red lipstick?

If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead who would it be?
Again hands down Mae West. She was a pistol.

How did you get your model name?
What?! This old thing?

Actually it's derived from my favorite burlesque star of yesteryear Lili St Cyr and Celia Cruz because she was the undisputed Reina of the Latina entertainment world.

Tattoo Tuesday: Split Lips Alvarez

Name or Alias: Split Lip Alvarez Occupation: Receptionist and Marketing Assistant Age of first tattoo: 19 Artist/shop/location of your favorite tattoo: Thomas Hendrix / Sink or Swim Tattoo / Upper middle back Princess Leia tattoo 1) Is there any special story to why you chose your favorite tattoo? I love Star Wars, and have always loved Princess Leia's attitude and resilience in the movies. 2) Do you have any other tattoos? If so, what do you have and where? I currently have 14. A diamond with the roman numeral II inside it on the back of my neck. 2 is my favorite/lucky number. A lotus flower tramp stamp that I got when tramp stamps were still popular. It is the one tattoo that I may eventually cover up. A peacock on the right side of my back/ribs. I grew up with two peacocks as pets at my grandmother's farm, and I have always loved them. Lady Justice Pin Up on my right arm. I have worked in legal for 8 years, and have a love/hate relationship with justice and the legal system. Several stars located in various spots on my body, a giant rose with dagger that says Daddy's Girl on my left calf, obviously because I love my Pops. A swallow with my son, Jaden's name on the banner on my left ankle, and a KCMO tattoo on the back of my right ankle. 3) How do your family and friends feel about your tattoo(s)? Have you run into any adversity or negativity because of them? Most of my friends are pretty heavily tattooed and have no issue with mine at all. My family, on the other hand, is generally not a fan. My parents have given up trying to reign me in though, as I have always followed my own path, much to their annoyance. As far as general negativity, I sometimes get looks or comments about my tattoos, but for the most part, I rarely notice anymore. 4)What's the most interesting experience you've ever had in regards to your tattoos? I think the most interesting experience I have had with my tattoos is usually people asking to take pictures of my Leia tattoo. I get stopped nearly every time I am wearing something that shows it. I don't mind though, because it is something I am very proud of.
5) What is your least favorite part of being tattooed? Do you have any stories/advice to people who are not tattooed? Every summer when I go to a public pool or water park, I have people come up and touch me. People seem to think that someone with ink should have no issues with them coming up and touching their tattoos, even if those tattoos are on a part of the body that you wouldn't normally feel comfortable touching on a complete stranger. I would advise people to ask before touching and don't assume that someone who has tattoos is ok with being basically groped by a complete stranger just because you like their tattoos. 6)What is the best tattoo after care advice you have received? I would say the best advice I have received is to keep it moisturized continuously while it is healing. Not overly moisturized, but enough that it doesn't get dried out. Also, plan your tattoos in advance so that you aren't ending up on a vacation or something where you need sunscreen because that or a sunburn, will not be good for a healing tattoo. 7)What style of tattooing do you prefer? Are you more of a black & gray collector or is bright bold traditional more your speed? I love bright, bold and new school traditional art. 8) Do you have any “cover ups”? If you do, why did your get it covered? None yet. 9) Do you have any other body modifications? Other than having my ears stretched out to 1/2 in, I have taken out most of my piercings and modifications.

How long have you been modeling/enjoying photography?
I have been modeling since I was like 18 but went to modeling school at a young age. I moved to LA in '99 and left 2010. I learned alot, wa sin SAG and worked hard to live there. I began nude modeling professionally just before I left LA. I continued back in AZ. It had been good to me. I love pin up nudes! I only began pin up like a yr n half ago! From 1st shoot til last I have always been prepared, confident and had tons of sheer fun! There are times I have shot 3 days n one week and did that for 3 weeks in a row, plus teach! I am also a stay at home wife and mom!

Who are your favorite Pinup Models? Past or present inspiration? Past, Marilyn Monroe, Jane Mansfield, Betty Page. Present, Dita, Sandra Wilson, Katty DeLux. I don't really follow many of today's pin ups, there is so many! The 3 I mentioned, I look up to, give me inspiration and I take the time to follow and learn from!
What is some of your favorite clothing lines? Favorite Designers? Hummmm, well I'm not really into labels. I try and never repeat and outfit when I shoot for mags, so I have to budget my funds wisely. I'm not not into labels, more into the look and fit. Secrets in Lace looks fabo and would love to buy one day. Also Dita's new line looks amazing. and I just premiered my one of a kind corsets by La Kiss Boutique. www.lakiss.com. I'd say at this point in my life I am into real vintage clothing. I have such few items I own. I love modeling it as well!
If you could shoot with any photographer, past or present, who would it be? Wow, present? Anyone who shoots Dita, lol. Past? Bunny Yeager. I would love to be like her one day. She was a model and she taught models how to pose and photographed them!
What is your favorite color and why? I guess Pink. I used to hate it because that's the color my mom always wanted me to wear. So got tired of so much pink! But now I love it! lol.
If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead who would it be? Idk. Some icons I adore, I think I;d rather not meet personally. Its almost like watching a documentary on their life. Acn be super interesting but the way I see them I want to keep that image in my mind! Plus I doubt I could eat with a fav star of mine at table. I guess, hummmmm past Marilyn Monroe. Present, Pam Grier aka Foxy Brown, aka Sheba Baby. I am doing a re-creation of her June 10th we Gwendolyn Tundermann!
How did you get your model name? Well my real name is Kandi Andres. I selected " Dianna Prince " from the org TV show Wonder Woman. Her name was Dianna Prince and she was an amazon from Paradise Island! Most comic book fan know where my modeling name is from! Linda Carter was and still is stunning!

Tattoo Tuesday: Devyn Beth

Name or Alias:  Devyn Beth
Occupation: Vintage Clothing Dealer/ Communications Manager for Foxy Pinups/ Pinup Beauty Maven and pinner of hair
Age of first tattoo: 25
Artist/shop/location of your favorite tattoo: Dallas Self KC, MO
1) Is there any special story to why you chose your favorite tattoo? Well I chose a little bird, that resembles the little birds that are always there for princesses in Disney Movies, Like Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty. Sometimes I get overly critical of myself, and I start to question my worth and value, this little birdy reminds me every day, that I am Worthy of whatever it is I want or dream for myself, or whatever good thing that life gives me.
2) Do you have any other tattoos? If so, what do you have and where? Yes, I have some lovely roses on my back right shoulder, a bouquet of of California Poppies and a Sunflower on my left leg, a tiny little anchor on my foot, and a larger anchor on the back of my right leg that has my wedding date on it. 3) How do your family and friends feel about your tattoo(s)? Have you run into any adversity or negativity because of them? My mom always cringes and communicates how much she hates each tattoo I get, but over time she learns to accept them and even appreciate them. Other than that, they have never been an issue as far as negativity goes.
4)What's the most interesting experience you've ever had in regards to your tattoos? Well, one time, I was mistaken for a girl who worked at a tattoo shop while I was waiting for the artist to finish his sketch. I was sitting at the coffee nedt sure, and this college aged dude.. told me "congrats on the new tattoo shop!" lol I said, " Oh, haha, I don't work there or anything" and he said " Oh well you look like you would because of your hair!" Hahahaha.. it was so funny! I had a weird conversation for a few minutes after that with him, and he seemed to think I was at least 10 years younger than I actually am, so I was okay with it! LOL
5) What is your least favorite part of being tattooed? My favorite part of being tattooed is that I have these pretty pieces of art that make me so happy to see that are always with me and always in my eye shot! My advice for people who are not tattooed who want to get one, is be very picky about what you want and get exactly that, don't settle, and spend the extra money to get something that is going to be beautiful and well done-- don't go for something just because it's cheap-- I have one like that, and its pretty ugly, I will probably have to pay more money to get it covered up someday.
6)What is the best tattoo after care advice you have received? If you wake up in the morning after your session and your clothing is stuck to where that tattoo is, do not try to remove your clothing!! Get into the shower with that stuck clothing item on and get it wet, it will then come off easily.. if you try to pull it off, you will open so many wounds, it will really hurt, and you will probably damage your new ink.
7)What style of tattooing do you prefer? Are you more of a black & gray collector or is bright bold traditional more your speed? I really love american traditional styling. I love bright colors, and in every aspect of my life--I tend to go for things with an old school feel.
8) Do you have any “cover ups”? If you do, why did your get it covered? YES! The roses on my back covered up my first tattoo... which was a really poorly placed and poorly executed new-school style butterfly. It was very small and as it aged it faded into looking like a bruise from far away. Also I really wasn't a fan of any aspect of that tattoo... I got that on a random night and just picked it off a flash sheet from a random tattoo shop on a whim.
9) Do you have any other body modifications-- nope and I probably will never have any.. getting pierced scares me!

Tattoo Tuesday: Casey Catastrophe

 Name or Alias: Casey Catastrophe
Occupation: Model
Age of first tattoo: 15
Artist/shop/location of your favorite tattoo: Bleeding Heart Tattoo

1) Is there any special story to why you chose your favorite tattoo?
Yes,I have a traditional style Vulture on my right forearm. One day I was driving in 100 degree heat, and this vulture fell from the sky due to heat stroke. I pulled over and tried to give him some water, and then a cop car pulled over. He loaded the bird into his cruiser and followed me back to my house, so we could hose down the poor vulture. Unfortunately, the bird died. But it was one crazy afternoon. So my tattoo is sort of a commemorative one.

2) Do you have any other tattoos? If so, what do you have and where? I have quite a few, lol. My right sleeve contains a vulture, a rose, a possum, a pumpkin, a broomstick, a mouse with an apple, and a cat holding a fan. I have 2 cows, a chicken, a pig, and the word "compassion" tattooed on my stomach, because I stopped eating meat when I was 15. My chest has 2 squirrels kissing and triskeles on either side. But I really just have too many to list off.

 3) How do your family and friends feel about your tattoo(s)? Have you run into any adversity or negativity because of them?
Tattoos have been a huge part of my life, in good ways and bad. After I got my third tattoo, my father threatened to kick me out of our house. My family doesn't approve of my tattoos and it's made things really tough. To them, people who have tattoos are within the lower rungs of society, the criminals, punks, druggies and dirtbags. My friends love them of course! Most of my friends are tattooed as well.  Outside of my family I haven't run into any issues really. Most of the time, it's people stopping to ask me questions. Which I don't mind, but sometimes I just want to shout "leave me alone, I'm busy!!" lol.

4)What's the most interesting experience you've ever had in regards to your tattoos?
Traveling in other countries is always really interesting. Especially Mexico. My husband and I were recently in Cozumel, and so many people were just mesmerized by us! It was really interesting. They clearly hadn't seen many heavily tattooed/modified people before.

5) What is your least favorite part of being tattooed? Do you have any stories/advice to people who are not tattooed?
People who want to tell you about theirs, or the ones they plan on getting. No offense, but most of the time I don't want to hear about it. Like standing in line at Starbucks, some stranger will just start telling me about what their tattoo means. Or people who assume that I'm a tattoo artist and want a price quote, which happens ALL the time. I guess my advice would be this, approach a tattooed person the same way you would a normal person, with respect. Realize that you are asking a total stranger to take time out of their day to answer your questions.

6)What is the best tattoo after care advice you have received?
Wrapping your tattoo in saran wrap over night has been the best healing method I've ever tried. I think it's called a "wet heal". Normally a tattoo will get dry, start to flake and sometimes scab as it heals. But if you wrap it over night, it stays moist, usually resulting in little to no scabs forming and pulling ink out of your new tattoo.

7)What style of tattooing do you prefer? Are you more of a black & gray collector or is bright bold traditional more your speed?

Color, color, color! I love having colorful skin! lol. My favorite style of tattooing is illustrative. A mixture of thick and thin lines, and vibrant colors, like you would see in a storybook illustration.

8) Do you have any “cover ups”? If you do, why did your get it covered?
Not yet! But I am planning on getting one. I have 3 runes on my shoulder. They don't really mean anything to me anymore, and I am constantly asked what they are and what they represent.

 9) Do you have any other body modifications?
I have my ears stretched to about 5/8 of an inch and hopefully one day I'll make it to an inch. I also have my cheeks pierced, as well as my septum and both my nostrils.

How to: Walk in Heels

Do you ever find yourself coveting big, high fashion heels, but think to yourself, "I cannot walk in those."?  The thing is, you can, and for once in your life (or more) you should!

A great pair of heels can help elongate your legs and make a good ensemble, a great one.  Here are some tips to getting your up in the big girl leagues.

  1. Start with a small kitten heel or small wedge.  Once you get comfortable in a smaller heel height, it is easier to graduate to 4 inch heels.
  2. The best place to practice walking in your small heels, in your own house.  Carpet is one of the hardest surfaces to walk on in heels, so if you can master that, you are already ahead of the game.
  3. Don't expect your feet to love their new found height right away.  In doing this don't plan on wearing your heels for hours upon hours at a time.  Try wearing your shoes for a few hours at a time, until your feet and legs start to adjust to the incline.
  4. Slowly introduce new heights in. Also, if you find heels that have a small platform at the toe, it makes the transition to bigger heels easier.  (A four inch heels with a two inch platform, really will only feel like 2 inch heels)
  5. Wedges make learning to walk in four or five inch heights so much easier than a stiletto pump.

I hope you find these tips helpful, and slowly start to venture into a higher territory.  Just remember that there is a time and place for stiletto heels, and that doesn't mean everywhere.

Stay Sweet,
Katty

Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend: On a Budget

My best gal pal, Devyn, and I had talked about going to Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend 2014 for months.  We had been told over and over that is was too expensive to go to, that nobody would notice us, and that basically it was not worth the time or money to go.

Well, I'm a see-for-myself kind of gal.  Devyn and I began plotting and planning to see how we could get to Vegas, on a budget, and still have the best time.  Needless to say, we did. We saw, we went, we didn't overspend, and we had a blast.  We are already planning for next year!

If you are not familiar with Viva, it is an annual gathering of people that have a love to vintage/retro culture, cars, and most definitely rockabilly music.  There are over 100 bands playing at any given time, burlesque shows and competitions, pinup pageants, a huge car show, and vendor booths.  It is one of the most fun times I have ever had.

Here are some of my tips to stay on budget, but still have the best time you can!

  1. Get your Viva Las Vegas ticket early.  Like, now-ish.  The four day wrist band was $120 in advance, which seems kind of steep, but it gets you into EVERYTHING.  You can get into see all the bands, all the vendor booths, the car show, burlesque showcase (which is a must see), and pretty much anything there is happening at the Orleans (the hotel/casino that hosts the event)
  2. Book your flight (if you are flying) on a Tuesday.  Fares are cheaper when you book your flight on a tuesday morning.  Also when planning to go make sure to get to Vegas the Wednesday before the "weekend" actually starts.  There are a lot of "pre" events that happen wednesday night, and you will miss out on them.
  3. Figure out your hotel plans and book it now!  Do not feel obligated to stay at the Orleans.  In fact most people we met was staying off site, and really, it was nice to get to leave for a bit, and just zone out for a moment.  There are a lot of deals in vegas, and staying where a deal is, well is a good idea.  Devyn's family has a time share, 3 minutes down the street from the Orleans, and it was soooo worth staying there.  We did stay at the Orleans two nights, and I booked those rooms through Hotels.com, which is a great package option to look into.
  4. Rent a car.  This will save you so much money. Cabs are NOT cheap and if you have a car, you have the ability to go wherever you want.  If this is something that you want to leave out of your budget, there are shuttles that run all the time to take you around, just know that most of them stop running around midnight.
  5. Valet is free in vegas.  Everywhere we went, free valet.  You do have to tip, but in comparison to cab fare, valet is the route to go.
  6. When you get yourselves into town, and if you have a car, get yourself to a grocery store.  Buy a big case of water (I promise you will burn through it fast) and portable snacks.  The climate change made Devyn and I so thirsty, all the time.  If you have a big bottle of water with you where ever you are, you won't spend $5 on a drink that isn't necessary.  Also, there is so much going on, all the time, it is easy to skip meals.  If you have a snack with you, you also will make healthier food choices.
  7. Do not feel obligated to eat in the casino or at the buffets.  There are plenty of dining choices, that will be more cost effective if you eat outside of the Orleans.
  8. Do NOT carry all your cash with you at all times.  We heard of a purse thief going around and a lot of women lost all their cash, along with the handbags.  Be smart about what you take with you and where you leave it sitting.
  9. Be watching your favorite vendors social media sites before the event.  A lot of companies offer VIP tickets to events, special coupons, and free meet and greats.  These events were fun and allowed us to meet a lot of people that we look up to!

Manhattan because, I feel it evokes a fun big city vibe, and I would love to spend some time in New York City! Also, I LOVE geeky stuff and am a huge Watchmen graphic novel and Dr. Manhattan fan.

Tattoo Tuesday: Riskay Business

Name or Alias:

Occupation:
Hair Stylist, Barber & Makeup Artist

Age of first tattoo:
18

Artist/shop/location of your favorite tattoo:
Don & Debra Yarian
Eagle River Tattoo in Eagle River, AK

1) Is there any special story to why you chose your favorite tattoo?
Having to choose an absolute favorite is a tough one.. I would probably have to go with my portrait of my dad and I. He's the most important person in the world to me and it's an honor to wear him on my skin.

2) Do you have any other tattoos? If so, what do you have and where?
I have a total of 221 hours of work on me. Arms, neck, chest, throat, fingers, thighs, feet, calfs all over. Eventually I will have everything but face and stomach. I have traditional, Japanese, portraits, grayscale and color pieces.

3) How do your family and friends feel about your tattoo(s)? Have you run into any adversity or negativity because of them?
My dad is always concerned about people prejudging me but he's know since I was a child and constantly drawing on myself it was bound to happen. He knew it was in the cards and he's extremely supportive of me.

4)What's the most interesting experience you've ever had in regards to your tattoos?
Oh god.. Love it when people try and lift my skirt to look at my thigh pieces. I don't wear underwear.. Do not do it!

5) What is your least favorite part of being tattooed? Do you have any stories/advice to people who are not tattooed?
Just the ignorance and judgement of people in general. I moved to Colorado January 2013 and finding a salon to work in has been miserable due to my neck and throat being tattooed. I'm also not allowed in many restaurants and bars.

6)What is the best tattoo after care advice you have received?
It's all about the first wash. You get that done correctly and you're golden!

7)What style of tattooing do you prefer? Are you more of a black & gray collector or is bright bold traditional more your speed?
Depends on the piece itself. I have both color and grayscale pieces.

8) Do you have any “cover ups”? If you do, why did your get it covered?
Absolutely not. I don't get anything tattooed on my flesh if it's not sticking around.

9) Do you have any other body modifications?
Just the ink. I did the whole piercing thing when I was younger. Too many got torn out.

*New* How to Mondays ~ Thrift Shopping

Welcome to the new Katty Delux Blog.  After 4+ years of blogging from Chronicles of a Sweet Tooth, exclusively, my needs as a blogger, and as a person trying to stay sane from all social media, I decided it was time to merge.

I run my own modeling website, www.kattydelux.com, on top of all other social media platforms and this space was beginning to feel old, uninspired, and I found that my voice was getting smaller and quieter.  So merging is the direction I felt it going.  This blog will continue to be published here, on blogger, but will also be pushed to my website for view there as well.

In addition to merging everything, I am also write new things, promoting new stores, and prompting new ideas to keep my writing fresh and my ideas new.  So, onto the new-ness.

Mondays will be a fun new way to explore the "how to's" in your life.  Sometimes I find myself in a situation thinking "How do I do __________?"  Well, you can now join me here, every Monday, to learn a new task, or skill.  (If you ever want to know  about a certain skill or just want a specific on how to do something, leave your question in the comments and I will put it in the list of how to posts!)

I love thrifting.  I fact, I think thrifting is one of my favorite things to do.  I do it with the Mr. and especially my best gal pal Devyn.  Sometimes I even do it all alone.  It is like a solace when I need to quite my thoughts.

I have found some AMAZING finds, some of which were extremely valuable, and some that are just hilarious finds.  I have also clothed myself for many events in the best vintage I could have ever imagined.

Here are some of my tips in learn the "trade" of thrifting, and yes, there are certain things I always do, as if I am superstitious, but that is how it goes.

  1. Never be in a rush.  Never.  The reason I say this is because, when you are rushing you miss the details.  It is so easy to brush past a really great vintage piece because it is lodged between to horrible, trashed up Forever 21 shirts.
  2. Know when restocking days happen.  There are several thrift stores around my house, and I have learned when the racks and shelves get restocked.  It you are friendly to the associates that work there, I bet they will let you know that information too.
  3. Learn the sale days.  Most thrift stores have certain days of the year where they run things on sale.  They also have certain days of the week that particular items will be discounts.  In addition to that, some stores offer a discount stamp card to use towards future purchases or by signing up for their club card you get a discount every time you shop.
  4. Keep your tax receipts that are given for donations.  This one is a no brainer.
  5. If you purge an area in your house, immediately put your donation bag in you car.  Some stores will give you an in store discount simply for donating. I usually keep a small bag of items to donate in my car, cause I never know when the mood with strike to shop.
  6. You have to put in, to get out.  I firmly believe that the thrift store gods are more likely to bless you with great finds if you, yourself, are donating back into the system.  Plus if you are bringing home more goodies, you really should practice safe purchasing and purge your self of unwanted/unneeded items
  7. Help when and where you can.  When I am pursuing the racks, if I come across shirts that have fallen off the hanger, or just a mess match of items, guess what, I'm going to put it where it belongs, or put the shirt back on it's hanger.  Its just thrift store karma.  It will take me two seconds, it helps the associates, and makes it easier for the next customer.
I hope some of these little tips and tricks helps you on your next thrifting adventure!  I would love to hear or see some of the wonders you have found while out and about

Stay Sweet,
Katty
