Sweet Taste of Freedom ~ Too Good Triangles

After reading this interview, I think I have fallen in love with a Canadian!  Not only is she hilarious, (I can see myself having the most fun adventures) but she can cook too!! You all know I am all about sweets, and this lady takes the cake!

1. Where are you from? Cambridge, Ontario, Canada.

2. How did you get your business started? I would say that the seed for this business was planted when I was 7 years old.  That’s when I first got a taste of my grandmother’s yummy delish and highly addictive Too Good Squares and fell in love. This one-of-kind dessert is a mix between a butter tart and a chocolate chip cookie so it’s basically heaven in your mouth. About 15 years later I asked my grandmother for the recipe, switched it up a bit, turned them into triangles so that every piece had that signature crispy edge to go with its gooey center, and I began making them for friends and students of mine. Over time people started asking to buy full batches and in 2012, Too Good Triangles was born. Every Friday I give away 4 free batches in our TGT Freebie Friday Contest on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram, and this has done a lot to spread the word about the bestest dessert in the entire history of ever. Many assume I have an actual store but I do my baking in my cute little kitchen, all of my orders are online, and 10% of ALL sales goes to the Cambridge & District Humane Society to help our furry friends. I do not sell TGT in stores or restaurants, although I get requests to do so quite regularly.

3. What inspires you? Life itself. Nature, my home, my kitties, words, people who are fully themselves, technology.

4. How long have you been open and what are some of your favorite products? I launched Too Good Triangles in September 2012 and we recently celebrated our first year of business with “8 Days of Awesome”; a ton of freebies and sales for 8 days straight! It was SO much fun! I sell three versions of the same product: Classic TGT, Gluten-Free TGT and Vegan/Gluten-Free TGT, and my favourite has got to be the Vegan/Gluten-Free TGT. I’m not vegan myself, but the flavor of this version is unparalleled. Apart from the triangle shape, our Vegan TGT is totally different from the original and is best described as a nutty, chocolate fudge brittle. It’s our most popular of the 3 versions of TGT and 90% of those who eat them are not even vegan. Yes, they are THAT good!

5. What celebrities would you most like to eat your product? Ellen Degeneres and Russell Brand. My Vegan/Gluten-Free TGT recipe was created specifically for Ellen and I would love to see her and her wife, Portia (also vegan), fall in love with this dessert. As for Russell Brand (yet another vegan), I’m just looking for any excuse to meet my future husband. Plus, my tasty triangles will aid in his revolution. I’m not saying that the bestest dessert in the entire history of ever will change the world, but I am implying it.

6. If you had only one word to describe yourself, what would it be? Inspired.

7. What is your biggest pet peeve? It’s a tie between idling cars and litter bugs.

8. What are your favourite websites? I use Facebook like a mofo and adore www.todoist.com to keep my life organized.

9. What is your dream job? Not having one. Life spent between the beach, the forest, the kitchen, the computer, and the bedroom is my idea of heaven and I’m grateful every day for this simple and beautiful life I’ve created.

10. What would people be surprised to learn about you? Despite being a Pastry Pimp, I don’t have a sweet tooth. I do, however, have a penchant for steak and vodka.

How long have you been modeling/enjoying photography?
I started modeling for a local department store when I was 6!!  I went on a long hiatus after that (haha!)  I got into pinup in 2011

Who are your favorite Pinup Models? Past or present inspiration?  I am a majorly huge Doris Mayday fan.  I saw some photos of her back in 2010 that really inspired me to not hate my curvaceous (big hipped) body.  I realized that an hourglass is a pretty hot body type and that I should flaunt it!  Oh and Katty Delux (author of this here blog)  because she's my bestie and we are like two witches with one wand.. (powerful on our own... but BAM!!!--when we're together)

What is some of your favorite clothing lines? Favorite Designers?  I am obsessed I mean.. OBSESSED.. with Pinup Girl Clothing and all of their house brands.  I feel like PUG can do no wrong.  I love that the make dresses that look beautiful on any sized woman, and its a company owned and ran by women!  I want all of their clothes in my closet, oh and their purses.

If you could shoot with any photographer, past or present, who would it be? Here's my short dream list:  Laura Byrnes, Vestige, Viva Van Story, Redrum Collaboration, Lori Anne Photography, Holly West Photography,  666 photography and Sherbet Birdie....  okay I guess its not that short of a list!

What is your favorite color and why? Pink... I am a girly girl through and through so naturally, I am drawn to the color.  I have a ridiculous amount of pink dresses and I have to  put my self on a pink-dress buying ban! I need some other colors in my wardrobe!

If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead who would it be? I think it would be fun to have dinner with the teen-aged versions of my grandparents!  They always share the funniest stories of their younger selves I would love to meet them at those ages!!  Plus it would involve time travel to the 50s!!  And what rockabilly/pin-up/vintage lovin' gal wouldn't want to time travel to the 1950s???

How did you get your model name?  It's just my name, nothing fancy although my friends call me Dirty D because I sometimes have a potty mouth and find sexual innuendos in EVERYTHING.
What is your favorite city to visit and why?  I love Los Angeles! My husband is from SoCal so we visit L.A. often.  I feel like I really fit in there.. it is home to a HUGE population of rockabilly and vintage loving folk and it just feels like home when I am there!

Do you have a favorite song or artist? Butch Walker is my favorite artist!!! I have loved him since 1998 and I still love him.  He is alittle bit  of glam rock, alternative rock, blues, and a touch of rockabilly all wrapped up into one hot little package.  You may not have heard of him, but you should.. get to googling and download is his stuff form iTunes!  He is also a fantastic producer and has had his hand in many major hits and collaborations with bands and artists like Fall out Boy, Pink, Weezer and even Puffy!!

Makeout Monday ~ Most Wonderful Time of the Year

I had a super fun shoot with Elizabeth Renee Photography for her Christmas set.  I even got real silly with one of my friends, Meg.  I love Christmas and even put up my christmas tree with weekend.  I know that I should have waited, but I am not hosting Thanksgiving at my house, and really I just wanted to get out all the sparkle lights and and enjoy the traditions that come with opening decorations that used to belong to my grandmother or mother.

Do you have any traditions that you follow for the holiday season?  What color(s) are your holiday schemes?

Stay Sweet,
Katty

How did you get your store started?

I have always had a passion for photography, and it bloomed into a business around 2010 when people started asking me to take their family portraits. I started slow, photographing mainly family and friends, and now I'm photographing people who I've never met and have been referred to me, or have found my photography in other ways.
What inspires you?

I'm a girly-girl. I love whimsical, flowy, and dreamy. I'm a total princess at heart.  That inspires my creativity, especially when photographing young girls and women.

I love opening a window into a person's heart that lets them see their true beauty. That's what really inspires me.
How long have you been open and what is some of your favorite items?

I've been a photographer since 2010 and I don't really have a favorite shoot; I really find something I love in each session I do.
what celebrity would you most like to wear your items?

The celebrity I'd most love to photograph would be Scarlett Johannsen because she is luscious and gorgeous! I'd also love to shoot Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's family. I have a huge soft spot for families that adopt.
if you had to use only one word to describe yourself, what would it be?

Real.
what is your biggest pet peeve?

Drama. I have no time for that mess.
what are your favorite websites?

I am constantly on Facebook, and I really love looking at all things photography-related.
what is your dream job?

I'd love to be able to teach part-time (I'm currently a full-time teacher), do photography as well, and stay at home with my daughter.
what would people be surprised to learn about you?

I hear I'm funny. My husband might disagree, but my friends seem to think I'm rather funny. :)

Makeout Monday ~ Things I love this week

I thought I would put together several local, to Missouri, recipes that would be stellar for thanksgiving. The past few years I have hosted Black Friday Thanksgiving at my house and all the food served was local (at least within 100 miles).

I always like to support small businesses and when cooking, I like to support local farms.  The question really should be why not?

If you are not local to Missouri, just search local produce to your area, and then start looking for recipes that use those items.  I am lucky to have several grocery stores that stock local grown produce, so it is super easy to locate, making it even easier to use!

Spinach Almond Crostini Appetizer

1 pound fresh spinach, washed, dried, and stemmed
1 clove garlic
3/4 cup sour cream
1/4 cup chopped toasted almonds, plus more for garnish
1 teaspoon chopped fresh parsley
1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme
1 teaspoon chopped fresh chives
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Kosher salt
Zest and juice of 1/2 a lemon
Toasted baguette slices, for serving

In a steamer basket set over 1 inch of simmering water, steam the spinach until wilted, a few minutes. Remove the spinach and drain well.
Put the spinach and garlic in a food processor and pulse until smooth. Add in the sour cream, almonds, parsley, thyme, chives, cayenne, and season with 1/8 teaspoon salt. Pulse until combined. Stir in the lemon zest and lemon juice.   Spread the spinach mixture on the toasted bread, sprinkle with additional chopped almonds, and serve.

Balsamic Roasted Brussel Sprouts

1 carton of washed and quartered brussel sprouts
Balsamic Vinegar
1 tbsp of minced garlic
1 carton of baby bella mushrooms
Olive Oil
Salt and Pepper to taste

Place brussel sprouts and mushroom on cookie sheet.  Toss veggies with balsamic vinegar, olive oil, garlic and salt and pepper.  Mix until veggies are cover.  Put into a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes until browned and tender to fork.

Glazed Carrots and Turnips

  • 3/4 pound turnips, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 3/4 pound carrots, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 teaspoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • Put the vegetables in a skillet just large enough to hold them in a single layer. Add enough water so that it comes halfway up their sides along with the butter and sugar. Bring to a boil over high heat, then adjust the heat to maintain a simmer. Cover the vegetables with a round of parchment paper just large enough to fit the inside diameter of the pan, or with a lid set ajar. Simmer the vegetables until tender, about 8 to 10 minutes. Remove the cover and raise the heat to high. Toss the vegetables frequently in the pan, as the liquid evaporates to a shiny smooth glaze. Season with salt and pepper to taste and serve
  • Mascarpone Whipped Potatoes

3 lb Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled, cut into cubes
    1 cup milk
    2 tablespoons butter
    1/2 cup mascarpone cheese
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1/4 teaspoon pepper
    2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives

In large saucepan, place potatoes and enough water to cover. Heat to boiling; reduce heat. Cover; cook about 15 minutes or until potatoes are tender when pierced with fork. Drain; return potatoes to saucepan.
Meanwhile, in small saucepan, heat milk and butter until butter is melted and milk is hot.
Gradually add hot milk mixture to potatoes, beating with handheld mixer until blended. Add cheese, salt and pepper; beat until potatoes are creamy and fluffy. Spoon into serving bowl; sprinkle with chives.

    Where are you from?
I’m originally from Guayaquil, Ecuador and moved to KC to go to college on 2006

How did you get your store started?

Everything started when I was a kid, I used to have collections of notepads, pencils, cases, then I became a graphic designer and I started to fall in love with paper goods even more when I designed our wedding. I love to have the ability to customize the things I use daily like my phone case or my notebooks so I thought I could share this with other people. My hope with this shop is to make products that can help women to find joy while they use their phone or drink coffee in the morning ( we are adding custom mugs earlier next year) or need to keep their desk organized with a desk tray or use a fun clipboard to make notes. I think office supplies and the things that keep ourselves busy don’t have to be boring! These things have helped me to stay organized and productive and hope they can help other people too.

    What inspires you?
As a visual person, I love how a design can change your mood and change how things are perceived in the world. Everything around is an inspiration, a reason to find joy on simple things our world provide us. As far as particular inspiration for my designs, I love modern contemporary designs with a vintage touch.

How long have you been open and what is some of your favorite items?
My shop opened officially last September. My favorite item are our trays. I use them as desk trays to keep my papers organized and to dress up our ottoman with some coffee table books. I also used them for our baby shower to serve drinks, they were a huge hit! I think they are very customizable and they can be used in many ways, and I love that!

What celebrity would you most like to wear your items?
I would love for Martha Stewart to check out my products one day.

If you had to use only one word to describe yourself, what would it be?
    Colorful

What is your biggest pet peeve?
Negativity. I love to be surrounded by people with BIG dreams and positive vibe.

    What are your favorite websites?

    what is your dream job?
What I’m doing at this moment, this is what I always dreamed! I love running my own business and love doing stationery and product design.

what would people be surprised to learn about you?

I’m terribly addicted to Berry white mochas from Caribou

    Thankful Thursdays

Something that I think is super easy to overlook is your health.  I am fortunate enough to live in a nation that has extremely high tech methods of healing.  This is both in the health care realm and in the holistic realm, however I think a lot of people still take both of those avenues for granted.

I am lucky that, while I have had to have two knee reconstructions, I don't have to wonder what it would be like to not get the attention I need, when I need it.

Additionally thinking about this, I am thankful that I live to be proactive about my health.  I pay attention to what I eat, I try to exercise, and also know that it also includes feeding and exercising my brain.

I hope that you are mindful about your health and if you aren't that you start making a move towards a healthier lifestyle.  This is not a soapbox, as I am far front the perfect picture of health, but it is always something I want to strive for, that being the perfect balance of health and wellness.

    Shoesday Tuesday

I swear Louboutin can do everything perfectly.  When I finally get to a point in my life where I have the ability to purchase a pair of shoes by this designer, I am going to, and I am not going to feel bad about it either.

This pair is pink suede with a bronzy cap toe and spikes.  Of course it features the smooth red bottom, but nothing can compare to how sexy your leg will look in a four to five inch heel sans platform.

Do you have a favorite shoe designer?
