Kem's Kandy for the Weekends

Are you looking at that level of organization.  The picture is practically singing, to me, right off the page!  Now, my kitchen might not be that organized, but it is getting there.  This picture is my inspiration.

So, this weekend, let this be the weekend that you go through your cabinets and clean stuff out.  Did you know that everything in your kitchen has a shelf life? Like even the things that don't have expiration dates printed right on it!

How many times do you pick up the same plastic bowl and fill it with leftovers, only to realize that you don't have the matching lid.  Are you almost slicing your fingers off because all of your cutlery is duller than dull?  I bet you have something in your refrigerator that is expired! I bet you $10.  Go, check right now.

First things first.  Throw out the junk!
  • If it is broken, missing pieces, lids, handle etc. Pitch it.
  • If the appliance doesn't work, it is dull, needs repair, or you NEVER use it.  Get rid of it.
  • Is there a reason why you have 15 plastic cups from various bars, restaurants, games?  No, get rid of them.  You would be suprized how classy you feel drinking out of a real glass with your dinner (or pizza) for that matter.
After you have thrown out all the junk, take inventory.  Did you need to get rid of your toaster and blender because they were broken?  Did you just throw out all your drinking cups because they were plastic and from takeout joints? Are you now down to your last three pieces of gladware?  Well, this is where you list what you need to "fill in the gaps".  Maybe you have been eying a new toaster oven that would take the place of a microwave and toaster.  Just an example, but you get it.

Canned Goods, and Boxed Goods, and Spices, Oh My!
  • Check every single expiration date.  If it is out of date, or going to expire soon, get rid of it.
  • If there is a box of crackers that have been in your cabinet FOREVER, get rid of them. No one wants them, and you need your new found room!
  • McCormick shares these guidelines for how long spices can be expected to last.
    • Herbs: 1-3 years
    • Seasoning Blends 1-2 years.
    • Ground spices: 2-3 years
    • Whole spices (such as cinnamon sticks and peppercorns): 3-4 years
    • Extracts: 4 years (except for pure vanilla, which lasts indefinitely)
Now again, here is where you take inventory.  This would also be a great time to think about holiday baking, as it is just around the corner.  What items do you know you will need.  Might as well get it now, in lu of last minute.

Lastly, your freezer and refrigerator.
  • If you can't identify the item, toss it.
  • If there is no clear date of the item, toss it
  • If is is clearly expired, get rid of it.
This space should be the easiest to clean, as most people keep this area pretty organized.
Good Luck with your kitchen cleaning and I can't wait to hear about your success stories!

Vintage Inspirations~ Let's bring back!

Thanks to my dear friend, Megan, I am now keeping a pretty eye open for brooches.  I remember my mother and grandmother having these special "pins" that they would wear but really I paid no attention to them.  That is, until my friend, Megan, decided to make a brooch bouquet for her upcoming nuptials.  We really have no idea how to do this, but from my several years experience in floral design
via
The thing that brooches really make me excited about is you can wear them during any season, and you can use them to turn are rather boring, drab outfit into to something extraordinary.  Brooches can be an heirloom that is passed down through generations, or perhaps they can be a tradition that you start yourself by finding a gorgeous piece at an estate sale.  Either way, I wished they would come back, or maybe I wished they wouldn't so that I may get a better selection to choose from!

What is an item that you would like to come back into fashion, or at least replace all the sad excuses for fashion these days?

Nearly Famous ~ Pinup Wednesday!

Samantha (Betty Rage) Piccolo //  Facebook //  Model Mayhem

Age:  20 (I turn 21 on 9/16)

Occupation:  Assistant Store Manager at Caribou Coffee Lake Forest (opening soon!)
Wanna be Roller Girl also, that's an occupation right? Feels like it, haha.

Where are you from:  Lansdale, PA but my fathers family is from Pittsburgh and I spent every summer out there so I consider myself from there also. If I was able to I would move out there in a heartbeat (I miss the mountains). I'm also a huge Pittsburgh sports fan, this year Steelers! Bring on the 7th ring!

Favorite photographer to work with:  I'm just getting started but my favorite so far would have to be River from River Walk Pin Up. He is very passionate about his work and loves pin up as much as I do!
Featured photo(s):
The first photo was from my first ever shoot when I was 18.
The second was at a car show. I was a promotional model for a photographer that was branching out into pin up.
The third and forth are from a recent car calender shoot for a cobra car club in north Chicago.

Artist/Photographer/location of featured photo(s)
1: Robert A. Photography outside of a warehouse in Racine, Wi2: Marnie Bigelow at the Kenosha, Wi car show
3 & 4: River Walk Photography at the Chicago Cobra Car Club garage

Tell me about your featured photo(s). When were they taken? Why are they your favorite?
1: This one was taken with a 1950s Cadillac! This is one of my favorite cars and thus one of my favorite pics! It was my first ever shoot and it was such a blast and the reason I continued modeling. I love pin up with girls smiling at the camera as much as the next person but I love smoldering looks even more.
2: The owner of this car was the ONLY gentleman that let me sit in his car at the show. He asked me if I could do that for him and I jumped at the chance. This was taken last spring (2010)
3: This was my first swimsuit photo shoot. I bought the suite specially for the occasion but I love it so much that I wore it all summer to the beach and as a halter top with a pair of high waisted shorts. Everyone says this photo doesn't look like me but I still love the pose I achieved.
4: We also did a casual wear segment with different cobras. The owner was watching me like a hawk to make sure I didn't scratch his baby!

How long have you been modeling/enjoying photography?
I started pin up modeling when I was 18 and was addicted from then on. It was my senior year and what a misrable year it was. I was by no means popular and constantly teased. I had a few close friends that kept me sain but pin up made me feel beautiful and powerful.

Who are your favorite Pinup Models? Past or present inspiration?
Bettie Page was the women that brought pin up to my attention. Masumi Max showed me how to exude sexyness by a simple smerk and Dita Von Teese taught me about being a beautiful women inside and out. These are very cliche women to idolize but I consider myself a walking cliche so it makes sense to me.

What is some of your favorite clothing lines? Favorite Designers?
I've never been much into designers, if I like it, I buy it. I do have a sad addiction to Doony and Bourke purses but my collection is very small (two) and I am keeping an eye out for preowned vintage bags. I've never felt a commitment to one specific clothing designer, I find many pretty but usually the price tag snaps me out of the urge. I buy on a budget so a lot of my pin up closet is from the sale rack or vintage stores. Most of the time I shop at Forever 21 and H&M because they are local, conveniently priced, and if you search hard enough you can always find vintage inspired items that you can wear every day. I do love Pin Up Girl Clothing. They are always getting in new items each season and the sale items are usually still good quality. I do prefer vintage items in general also. They have that soft warn look that you want in these photos. I do however buy ALL of my vintage lingerie (garters, thigh highs, etc) from Dollhouse Bettie. They have a large assortment of new and vintage items and at a very reasonable price.

If you could shoot with any photographer, who would it be?

To be completely honest I'm not that sure. I look at a lot of photos of pin up and I know what is good and what is bad but I couldn't give you a name of the photographer. Names do not stick for me. Right now my goal is to work with as many photographers as I can and maybe get published one day!

Wardian Cases aka Terrariums

I remember making these when I was younger.  They were probably made with a mason jar or a soda bottle, nothing fancy, but definitely something to keep me entertained.

"It's a great shame that whimsical Wardian cases are rarely found in our homes today.  My grandparents had fauna filled ones, and as a little girl I peered into it for hours, probably looking for fairies or some such.  Glass Wardian cases were extremely popular in upscale Victorian homes: filled with prized ferns, orchids and other flowers, the pretty miniature greenhouses sat proudly on table or on elaborate wrought stands."  ~ "Let's Bring Back" M. Kem's Kandy for the Weekends

I am going to enjoy my first cup of apple cider this weekend! This coming weekend in Kansas City the weather is going to be screaming AUTUMN as we are edging towards highs in the 60's!
Below is my favorite apple cider recipe.  I shared it last year, but as some of you are new readers, I thought I would share it again!

Hot Apple Cider
Serves 6
  • 1 1/4 quarts apple cider
  • 3 tablespoons firmly packed light-brown sugar
  • 7 whole cinnamon sticks, (6 sticks for garnish)
  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • Ground cloves
  • Freshly grated nutmeg
  • Salt

Directions

In a medium saucepan, whisk together cider, sugar, spices, and salt. Bring to a simmer over medium-low heat. Remove from heat; pour in brandy, if desired. Strain into a pitcher; discard solids. Serve in mugs, garnished with cinnamon sticks. (MarthaStewart.com)
