Birthday Week, Part Three

Two pretties for day number three.
I am sure they will be consumed this weekend.

Stay Sweet,

Vintage Inspirations~ Let's bring back!

Let's bring back silliness and the ability to be uncanny.  For some reason, I have grown to think that being funny, truly funny, has been thrown to the wayside.  I never think one should use humor to make someone feel badly about themselves or use it in a vulgar way.

I love hearing people laugh, and I am fortunate to be  married to one of the silliest people that I know.  Mr. Elliott usually says the wrong things at the wrong time, doesn't really mind being utterly ridiculous, and generally has no idea that he is, in fact, being funny.  To me, that is a gift, not a talent.

For me, humor bridges a lot of gaps.  I laugh when I am nervous, I laugh when I am not supposed to, and I laugh when things tickle me to death.  This is just part of me, just like I twist my hair when I am bored or unsure.  (Kids, I just told you my "tells".  You know, the body language people exude that tell you what they're thinking?  Now you can beat me at poker.)

I don't think there is anything wrong with adults being fun and wanting to make people laugh, and I wish this social aspect wasn't at marginalized as it has become.  So celebrate the silliness of your spouse, your children, even your friends!  Besides, I love being "the life of the party", and your party wouldn't be the same with out me! (Tongue firmly planted in cheek)
Mr. Elliott just wanted to see how many chins he could make.

This is my "saddest cat in the world face"

Stay Sweet,

Sweet, Sweet Sunday

We spent today redecorating.  And by we, I mostly mean Mr. Elliott.  In reality, I took a nap and he rocked it out.  That is pathetic, I know, but I was soooo tired.

We did get an amazing deal at Hobby Lobby today on a baker's rack.  I have been wanting one to use in displaying a small portion of the teapots that I collect.  Most of them are vintage.  I love them and was basically given a magic wand, cause I found one for around $50 today.

Also, a few weeks ago, I had my dad bring me this beautiful mirror that he salvaged from a remodel in about, oh, 1983 or so.  I have always seemed to have it in my room and just recently remembered that is was stored at my grandfathers house.  The mirror has a 1968 date on the back side of it, and it is huge and heavy.  So heavy, Mr. Elliott had to make brackets to mount it on the wall.  It is not quite finished, in that I am going to frame it in white trim.  But here is the start of it.

In addition to all that fun, Mr. Elliott also customized a piece for me.  I have been trying, so hard, to find mission style pine furniture to match what we have in our master bedroom.  Without fail, I have not found anything that I liked, or that was in my price range.  Enter: customization.

The piece started as a coffee table, and we just elevated it.  Presto Chang-o, it becomes an elegant high table.

Mr. Elliott has named it giraffe, but I think it turned out awesome, and it only cost $16. That is way cheaper than buying a new piece of furniture.

The rest of the day will be spent with friends at our weekly BBQ.  It is fajita day, so I can't wait to make some Skinny Girl Margaritas and enjoy the company of good friends.

Stay Sweet,

For Real Fridays

So far we have tackled medicine cabinet seasonal supplies, Car Kits, and Emergency Home Kits.  Today we are leaping into how to make a lower impact in your life and to the earth.

I am in no way a leading expert in this area, nor am I trying to heave my ideals onto another group.  I have recently told you of a part of my lifestyle choices, and I don't think that there is any harm in encouraging others to make a good impact on our earth.  Excuse the hippie-dippieness of this, but I do think we should cherish the environment in which we are blessed to have.

There are some very easy ways to introduce low/no impact living into your life.
  1. Start recycling at home!  Kansas City offers a recycle bin to add to the curb with your weekly trash.  I know most cities offer something like it.  Check out what your local city offers.  If not a recycle bin, find where donations of paper and glass can be recycled.  This saves on a lot of waste!
  2. Start shopping with reusable bags.  Most marts and shops have these for sale, and some even offer a discount with each bag that you use.  At a local grocery in KC, you get 5 cents off your bill for each bag that you use.  That might not seem like a lot, but it is something, plus you don't leave with a plethora of plastic.
  3. Stop buying bottled water.  My dear friend Amy, talked me up and down one day about the detriment of the earth because of bottled water.  I try very hard to keep a reusable cup or Water Bottle (Nalgene) with me.
  4. This biggest one for me is shopping local.  If I can buy something that was grown in Missouri, I am going to buy it.  For one, it supports community, and for two, it is probably going to taste a whole lot better because it is in season and didn't have to travel far to get to my plate!
A great new website, that I stumbled upon, is No Impact Man.  I am not quite as extreme as some of his ideas suggest, but I like his thought process.  I think if everyone just started making small changes in their own impact to life, we would see beautiful things come about!

Let me know of some of your no/low impact ideas!  The more you know, right?!?!

Stay Sweet,

Vintage Inspirations~ Let's bring back!

I am the proud owner of pale, pale skin.  I didn't used to be so proud.  In fact the barrage of tan skin that surrounds me on a daily basis, sometimes gets me a little down in the dumps.

Due to my German/English decent I have been blessed with beautiful creamy skin, that doesn't tan, only turns red and blisters in the sun.  If I worked hard, all summer long, I might have a shade or two darker come August, possibly even September.  I, however, have been an SPF worshipper since I was young.  I always have it on, even when I am not in the sun.  I have used a tanning bed approximately three times in my life (once for prom, twice for weddings)

After I began collecting tattoos, I avoid sun without SPF like the plague.  I am just not so sure when 'skin color' or the amount of tan in ones' skin became all the rage? Especially after knowing that skin damage leads directly to causing cancer, as well as showing age early.

With that thought, I say we bring back to naturalness of ones' skin tone.  If you are a beautiful bronze goddess, flaunt it!  If you have skin the color of chocolate, show it!  If your skin is as creamy as a glass of milk, work it!  Let's make fashion understand that all colors of skin on the spectrum can be dressed and look fabulous.  Stop making us think that tan is the best accessory to the summer.  You know what a better accessory is?  Not going to chemotherapy for cancer.  That is a better accessory!

Vintage Inspiration is to love your skin tone and don't try to be or fit into something that isn't you naturally.

Sweet, Sweet Sunday

This weekend, we ventured to Springfield to spend time with my Dad, Mom and siblings.  Every time I travel to Springfield, it seems to change more and more.  I guess this is the part where you say, "Kem, you are getting old."

Anyway, we got to spend time with my family and celebrate Father's Day!  I hope that your father is/was a kind man and that you got to celebrate with him.

My half sister Summer and I.  She doesn't like to show her teeth when she smiles

Summer.  She is pretty hilarious. She is nine going on 29.
