Stay Sweet,

Sweet, Sweet Sunday

This weekend is only day two, into a three day weekend, and the Mr. and I have got so so so much done.  I have been complaining, for awhile now, about my jankity shoe rack.  It was purchased out of need.  A need for the many, many pairs of shoes that I have.  Well, it was plastic and held together with plastic and after a couple of years of housing shoes, holding a tower of jeans, and just all around neglect, it was time for a new solutions.

Enter, man and construction!  After a short trip to Lowe's, we emerged with the tools to create a nice shoe rack! Well Mr. Elliott did it.  I was just the inspiration :)  It has turned out amazing.  I am so proud that Mr. Elliott has a knack for building things.

Yes, that is an accomplished weekend!

Shape up your Style I 3.0

With Step One, and Step Two already completed, we are now ready to formulate your new look. So far, we have purged and take stock of what was missing. Also, filled in the gaps with basic skin care, hair care, and personal care. Now it's time for the fun part! MAKEUP and some IDOL LOVE.

I decided to take a good hard look at some photos of celebrities, models, just general famous people of style, that I wanted to emulate. My Idols.  Most of these women happen to be gorgeous pinups. Vintage Ladies, if you will. Take a peek at my inspiration.
These woman all have beautiful skin and light eyeshadow, with a bold lip!  This is the direction I am going.

What is so great, is that you can pick anyone for inspiration.  Let's say that you love the simplistic look of the 70's.  Some great women to look to is Farrah Faucet, Karen Carpenter, or Bridget Bardot.  Maybe you are attracted to the 60's era, something along the lines of Mad Men.  Perhaps you are just attracted to a natural "beach" look.  Simply start looking at pictures from the era that you find  attracting.  Is it the simple hair styles and natural looking makeup?  Is that era know for super coiffed hair and structured dresses?

Step One: Research
  • Find some photos of some of your favorite people.  They can be famous or a home town celebrity :)  Use these images to gather information on what type of makeup you will need to get to help create this style.
  • You should make sure you are willing to adapt to this style, or then you are simply playing a character and not making it part of your own self.  I know I feel comfortable wear cat eyeliner, red lips, and victory rolls in my hair.  Do you feel comfortable doing that?  Whatever direction you choose to go, should be one that reflects your personality.  I am not saying you are never allowed to dress up your look once and a while, but in order to do something day in and day out, you should feel like you are stretching outside of your comfort zone.  If you are, I will tell you, you will be buying stuff you will never use and suddenly you are back to square one.
Step Two (the most fun): Shopping and Revamping
You should grab a girlfriend and take a trip to the local drugstore, Sephora, or MAC Counter.  Please keep in mind, if you are looking for specific things, you need to make a list to take with you.  The list should be comprised of:
  •  Shades of Lipstick/Lip gloss
  • Shades of Eye shadows
  • Eyeliner
  • Nail Polish (if wanted/needed)
  • Blush and/or Bronzer
If you know what you need to get before entering the makeup mecca, you can stay on budget and get everything to complete your look. The great thing about going to Sephora or MAC is that there are professionals there to help you try out new items and guide you in the right direction.  For spending $50 at MAC you can receive a Makeup Consultation to try out your new look.  Plus, it's kind of fun :)

I am going to list, from my inspiration board, items that I will be shopping for.  Some of these are definitely not necessary, but I feel like I need a little pick me up since I just purged by beloveds (makeup)
  • Kat Von D eye shadow palates (*cruelty free company)
  • Urban Decay Big Fatty Waterproof Mascara (*cruelty free company)
  • False eye lashes
  •  Ruby Woo Lipstick MAC
  • Russian Red Lipstick MAC
  • GaGa Viva Glam Lipstick and Lip glass MAC
  • Tarte Amazonian Clay Eyeliner set (*cruelty free company)
  • Urban Decay Score Blush
  • Bare Minerals Warmth
I hope this installment of Shape up your Style has been helpful.  I would love to see any photos (before/after style, shopping experience, etc) that helped get you to where you want to be!

Joplin MO Tornado

Yesterday, Joplin MO, along with other southern states were hit with devastating tornadoes.  For those of you who know me, I grew up in Springfield, which is close to Joplin, by just a few short minutes.  I have family and friends that live very close the the Joplin region, thankfully they are all safe. Joplin is predicted to be hit by another round of storms today.

The tornado hit is a high populated area, that included a hospital and the downtown area.  Right now, it is reported that 89 are dead and it is expected to rise.

Stay Sweet,

Sweet, Sweet Sunday

Well Missouri is having a bit of a weather identity crisis today.  Last night we had severe thunderstorms and tornadic activity.  Today it is HUMID and 80.  Yowza, I wasn't quite ready for the humidity to hit.

I did get some pretty sweet tattoos last night, so I thought I would share.  Yes, I know this is a name of a band, and no, that is not why I got it.  Mr. Elliott and some of his friends are starting a car club by this name, so there.  Long story short, it is for Mr. Elliott :)

Also, for good measure here are some photos from this weekend.

Stay Sweet,

Shape up your Style I 2.0

In the first Installment of Shape up your style, we purged your beauty products.  Now that you have cleaned out every bag, every shelf, everywhere, it is time to restock!  I am going to now expound upon Step 3 from last time starting with Skin Care and working our way through Hair Care and Maintenance. Lets start with the basics

Skin Care.  Since I am inching my way towards 30, I am taking better care of my skin then ever. If I were perfectly honest with you, I would tell you that I have been obsessed with taking care of my skin for a long time.  I have always been terrified of getting skin cancer or looking like a leather bag when I am 40, so this has been part of my routine since I was young.  I really think it matters less what you use, and more that you have a regimen.  Cleanse, Exfoliate, and Moisturize.  Those are the important steps.  I usually try to make sure that I have some sort of SPF in my moisturizer, but other than that, simple and easy. 1, 2, 3.  Obviously if you have a routine that covers more bases like, eye cream, wrinkle reduction, etc. that is fine. Continue on!  You have a routine, so congratulate yourself!  You are already ahead of the curve.  One of my favorite skin care lines is available at Sephora, Caudalie.  You can always ask for a sample.  It is love in a bottle!
Hair Care.  Now, again, if you already have a regimen, this is just a refresher.  This, however, does matter with brands.  I have nothing against less expensive brands, but I do know that, usually, if your hair is looking and feeling good, then you are using good products.  Ask your stylist the next time you go in for a cut, or color.  Do you know why your hair always looks amazing when you leave a salon?  Because they are 1. Using good products, and 2. well, its their job to know how to style your hair :)  Cheap products create buildup in your hair because they are made with "fillers"  Waxy, crappy fillers.  At first you might think, wow the _______ product makes my hair feel amazing and then after awhile you will notice that your hair feels limp, or frizzy, or dry.  Well, that my friends, is because it is cheaply made and starts to weigh hair down.  If you are thinking, gee Katty, I don't have all sorts of cash to go spending on salon products.  Don't fear! There are plenty of ways to get good deals.
  1. Get in good with your stylist.  You scratch her back, she'll scratch yours.
  2. Shop at TJ Maxx or Marshalls.  They always have salon products for a fraction of the price.
  3. Get on Beauty Brands mailer list.  This is store is ALWAYS sending me coupons for FREE full sized products of $$$ off my purchase.  Plus they have annual liter sales on shampoo and conditioner and full size hairspray.  Amazing.

Maintenance.  So, your skin is looking and feeling good, your hair is looking and feeling great, and here is where the problem begins.  You are saying, "Um whatever, I looking like a bombshell thankyouverymuch."   Well, if you don't keep this up, or what I like to call "stay on the curve", then guess what, it won't last.  There is a reason your hair stylist tells you to come back in 6-8 weeks, and it is not because they want your money.  Maybe it is a little about that, but mostly, even if you are growing your hair out, you still need to keep it shaped up.  A good haircut can grow out nicely, but if you think "Oh, I don't need to see her/him for awhile, because I am growing my hair out." That is dead wrong.  Keep the ends trimmed, and the shape maintained.  No one wants to walk around with split ends and a cut in the shape of a mullet.
  1. Keep seeing your hair stylist every 6-10 weeks, whatever they recommend.  They are the expert, so trust them.  Their name is on your head, so I promise they want you to look good.
  2. Ask your stylist about a good treatment between cuts.  If your hair is dry or frizzy, I bet they can recommend a great moisturizing masque for your hair.  Or, if you have fine limp hair, they can help your with volume.
Additionally in the Maintenance category, you need to maintain your skin as well.  I usually get a facial every 8-10 weeks.  This is a little indulgence I allow myself, and to me it is well worth it.  I would say if you don't want to splurge that often on an esthetician, then get a facial once a season.  I promise you will notice a big difference.  Every skin type undergoes big changes with the season, and a seasonal facial is a great way to jump start the beginning of Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.  Beautiful skin wears makeup a lot better then skin that needs a little TLC.   Another very inexpensive way to change your skin, vitamins and water.  Seriously.  A multi-vitamin and a lot of water makes your skin look amazing.
  1. Visit an esthetician once a season, or every 8-10 weeks.  I promise you will like this.  And because they are a professional, they can recommend a skin care line targeted just to your needs.
  2.  Take a multi-vitamin once a day.  My fav, Women's One a Day.
  3. Drink half your weight, in ounces, of water per day.  Example : If you weigh 150, drink 75 ounces of water per day.

Stay tuned for the the next installment of Shape up your Style, Idol Love.
